Himalayan herbs are considered as Devine medicines.
Due to unfavorable conditions of the growth of the
vegetation and prolonged winter, most of the herbal
species undergo dormancy in the high altitude areas
where heavy snow is witnessed in the winter. The
species start to sprout during the melting of snow
and rise in day temperate. The process of sprouting
and then growing of the aerial parts start from
March onward and gradually lush green vegetation
appear in the coming months of June-July. During
this period most of the species under go the
flowering and by the end of August the flowering
stops and the fruit bearing stage appear. When the
winter starts after 15th of September, the foliage
or the aerial parts start to become pale yellow and
ultimately these disappear by the end of October. In
this way again the species undergo the dormancy and
this process is repeated in nature years to gather.

In the temperate Medicinal and Aromatic plants the
useable portion for the raw material is derived from
underground part of the plants during dormancy. To
meet out the demand of the herbal pharmaceutical,
these underground parts are extracted from the wild
and in this way when the raw material is uprooted,
the particular plants dies forever, This situation
leads for many of the species to have either
disappeared from the natural habitat or at the verge
of disappearing. There is a long list of the plants
of Himalayan origin which have been declared as
endangered species and more species can be added in
this list in the coming years.
